Why was the symbol used to represent the pence ‘d’ and that of the shilling ‘s’? The symbols were actually derivations from Latin ‘denarius’ and ‘solidus’, which were used during the Middle Ages. The pound symbol (£) was derived from the letter ‘l’ in ‘libra’.

These were not the only terms used in the old English money system. A coin of one pound (£1) was known as a Sovereign. It was made of gold. There was also paper pound, which was known as a quid.
